Jesus' teachings referring to piffling children (παιδίον, paidíon) and infants/babies appear in several places in the New Testament and in the non-approved Gospel of Thomas.

New Testament [edit]

The King James Version of Matthew'southward gospel (chapter 18) relates that:

At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of sky?
And Jesus chosen a trivial child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
And said, Verily I say unto yous, Except ye be converted, and become
as footling children, ye shall non enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this trivial child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
But whoso shall offend 1 of these little ones which believe in me, information technology were meliorate for him that a millstone were hanged virtually his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs exist that offences come; just woe to that human being past whom the offence cometh!
Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two easily or two feet to be bandage into everlasting burn down.
And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and bandage it from thee: information technology is better for thee to enter into life with ane heart, rather than having two optics to be bandage into hell burn down.
Take listen that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew eighteen:1–ten)

The word translated as converted in the King James Version [i] (Greek: στραφητε, straphēte) literally ways 'turn'. It is translated as "turn" in the English and American Standard Versions and as "change" in the New International Version. Elsewhere in the New Testament, the change of middle demanded by John the Baptist and past Jesus oft uses the word metanoia (Greek: μετάνοια).[2] German theologian Heinrich Meyer suggests that Jesus' challenge to his disciples is to "plow round upon [the] road, and to larn a moral disposition like to the nature of little children".[3]

The Kingdom of Heaven is compared to picayune children at several other places in the New Testament:

  • Matthew 19:thirteen–xv

    Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
    Simply Jesus said, Suffer trivial children, and forbid them not, to come up unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
    And he laid his easily on them, and departed thence.

  • Luke 18:15–17

    And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw information technology, they rebuked them.
    But Jesus chosen them unto him, and said, Endure trivial children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
    Verily I say unto you lot, Whosoever shall non receive the kingdom of God every bit a piddling kid shall in no wise enter therein.

Gospel of Thomas [edit]

Another saying referring to pocket-sized children can be constitute in the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas. The two passages (Matthew eighteen:1-6 and the passage in Thomas) are different in tone. However, both offset past comparison those who enter the Kingdom of Heaven to children, and and so brand references to eyes, hands, and anxiety. In Matthew, Jesus suggests that these offending parts should be "cut off," whereas the passage in Thomas takes a unlike tone in describing spiritual cleansing and renewal:
